The Joliet Symphony Orchestra: War and Peace Featuring Jennifer Gosack Darwell, Flutist

April 28, 2019

Doppler’s Hungarian Pastorale Fantasy is rather unique to the salon fantasy repertoire in that it makes use of thematic material from well-known Hungarian Folk music, rather than the typical potpourri fantasies that incorporate themes from popular operas. This Austro-Hungarian work, composed in 1853 by Franz and Karl Doppler, was originally written for two flutes and orchestra, and is based on brilliant, flowing, gypsy melodies amidst this complex and virtuosic writing. It portrays a patronage to the nationalistic traits of Hungary, similar to Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsodies, and consists of a series of colorful variations, occasionally set off by interpolated orchestral interludes, as well as a contrast of lively and mournful moods, exemplary of Hungarian folk models.
